Episode 54: Quarantime’s Yule Log Christmas Companion
December 25 @ 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm PDT
On December 25th, join Quarantime! as we revisit the dawn of virtual Christmas celebrations: the 1966 Yule Log telecast from Gracie Mansion on New York’s WPIX. Long before America went virtual in 2020, New Yorkers knew their only option for a Christmas fireplace was a cathode-ray tube. We turn to the archives this holiday and honor this hearth that could be everywhere and nowhere all at once. A virtual yule log with a very special home: Gracie Mansion, the residence of then NY Mayor John Lindsay, an icon of that city and era.
Also on Christmas, we mine the Prelinger film archives for home movies from holidays past. In this covid year many of us may not be able to be with our families. But on Quarantime we’ll visit the Christmas trees, Menorahs and families caught on film— a reminder of our gatherings past and future. You want to see videos of kids opening presents and making a mess for parents to clean up? We’ve got ‘em, in glorious 8mm footage.
